I woke up this morning in a very grumpy mood. I didn't sleep well last night, I've had a lot on my mind and just couldn't relax enough to sleep, so I was awake 'til really early this morning. So my morning started out...rough. When I read todays devotional from Proverbs 31 Ministries, God quickly rebuked me. Although, the rebuke didn't stick for very long as I reverted back to my negative thoughts. The devotional was talking about how we so often think when we make a mistake, or forget something, 'What is wrong with me?' or 'I'm only human'. Should that be our first thought, or should we really be thinking 'What truth can I remember about God in this situation'
My first class was at 9 o' clock, and the teacher walked in the room asking how everyone was doing, my negative thoughts popped up again. I immediately, however, decided to keep quiet 'cause we all know 'If you can't say anything nice, then don't say nut'in at all!' (said by Thumper in Bambi) She also shared what the Lord had shown her that morning about her thought life. Are we thinking on truth? (Phil. 4:8)
Chapel was immediately after this first class, and of all the things that the speaker could have preached on, take a wild guess what he had been burdened to share? If you said our thoughts, you were correct!!
The message was taken from Phil. 4. He had an object lesson using 3 pitchers; some were filled with water, some were not. He asked us what the pitcher that had water to the brim was...(full)...then what the one that had some water in it...(half FULL)...then the one that had no water in it...(empty?) But is it REALLY empty? That thought right there reveals what our minds automatically think. If our lives are full of trials, and difficult circumstances, are we thinking of our lives as showing the goodness of the Lord or that we are going through a rough patch? Is the empty pitcher really empty, or does it have potential to be filled? The message went on reminding us of Phil. 4:13 'I can do ALL things through CHRIST which strengtheneth me.' How many of us learned that verse in Awana or Sunday School as a child? Do we live our lives with the knowledge that we can do ANYTHING in Christ? Needless to say, the Lord has been working in my heart today, to stop looking at the circumstances in my life in a negative way. I need to look at them from the perspective that God is doing a work in my life that I may not understand right now, but He has an eternal purpose for the situation.
How about you? Are you a Christian Eeyore? Have you been overwhelmed with all the NEGATIVE things in your life? Has this thought been an encouragement to you? If you would like, I would LOVE to hear what God has been doing in your life, how has this though made you re-think the circumstances you are going through?
Just the rambling thoughts of a burdened college student,
Love in Christ,
Jenn
